What to expect on your first visit
Our goal here at Kids City Dental is to make your child’s dental visit an easy and fun experience…especially theirs first! We understand some children and parents have reservations about visiting the dentist. A lot of these feelings come from not knowing what to expect. At our office, we are a big believer in showing and explaining everything we do in a fun way to your child. In doing so, we can eliminate any worries about the visit and gain the child’s confidence to set us up for a great appointment.
For every child to have a positive experience at their dental appointment, it is really important for each child to have a “fresh start” without any negative outside influences. Sometimes parents and older siblings want to prepare your little ones what to expect before and during a dental appointment, however, you can inadvertently share your own dental anxiety and fear with your child. Please avoid using threatening words like “shot”, “needle”, “pull”, “drill” and “pain”.
Every new patient will get a quick office tour
This is important, especially for a nervous child to know that there is nothing scary hiding.
We will explain each process to your child
before we start so he or she will know what to expect with no surprises.
We will be using age-appropriate and friendly dental terms
like “blowing bubbles” for a shot, “straw” for suction straw, “special toothbrush” for dental drill, “taking pictures” for x-rays and etc…
After each appointment
We encourage positive behavior with positive reinforcement by rewarding your child with a prize. Your child can pick a prize of their choice at the end of the appointment!
Fillings Post-Op
Baby teeth filling
whether white or silver, your child should have very minor discomfort. If the filling is placed in between the tooth/teeth, the gums in the area may be a little sore with very minor bleeding due to the cavity being close to the gum or under the gum.
Adult teeth filling
Can have more sensitivity after placement if the cavity is close to the nerve. It will be normal if the tooth feels sensitive while eating, especially to cold food or drink. The sensitivity can last from a few days to a few weeks, all depending on how well each tooth heal itself
Extractions Post-Op
Baby Teeth Extraction of Coronal Remnant
is the extraction of baby teeth that are loose and ready to fall out but have not and need our help because they are causing pain or unable to fall out by itself.
Post-op for coronal remnant
will consist of monitoring your child from 1-3 hours due to the local anesthesia or numbing medication given at the site, and making sure your child is biting down on a cotton roll is very important to help stop the bleeding faster and also to remind to the younger patient not to bite on the lip or cheek since they will be numb. With this type of extraction, there will be minimal bleeding after a couple of hours. You can change out the cotton roll if and when you notice it is soaked with saliva and blood. It is important not to change out the cotton roll to often because it can prevent the necessary clot to form which helps stop the bleeding. Once you notice the bleeding has stopped and the numbness has gone away, your child can stop biting down on the cotton roll. Usually, with this procedure, your child will not need any kind of pain medication.
Baby Teeth Extraction with Roots
This type is extraction is usually required for teeth are that retained or have an infection.
Post-op for baby teeth extraction with some to full roots
will consist of monitoring your child from 1-3 hours due to the local anesthesia or numbing medication given at the site, and making sure your child is biting down on a cotton roll is very important to help stop the bleeding faster and also to remind to the younger patient not to bite on the lip or cheek since they will be numb. With this type of extraction, bleeding can be expected from a couple of hours to a slow stop in a day. You can change out the cotton roll if and when you notice it is soaked with saliva and blood. It is important not to change out the cotton roll to often because it can prevent the necessary clot to form which helps stop the bleeding. Once you notice the bleeding has stopped and the numbness has gone away, your child can stop biting down on the cotton roll. You can give your child pain medication to keep them comfortable right after the treatment. For dental discomfort, it is best to use Ibuprofen / Motrin if not allergic. The second choice will be Acetaminophen / Tylenol.
Adult Teeth Extraction
Extraction of adult teeth are usually due to non-restorable teeth that are too broken down to save, or when the teeth are too crowded and need to be removed for orthodontics treatment to start.
Post-op for adult extraction
Local anesthesia or numbing will last 1-3 hours. During this time patient needs to be careful not to accidentally bite down on their tongue or lip. With this type of extraction, bleeding can be expected from a couple of hours to slow down toward the end of the day. The extraction site still may be bleeding light the next day, as this is normal. Right extraction, we will have you bite down on a cotton roll to slow down the bleeding. It is important to continue to bite down on the cotton roll until the bleeding has stopped. You should only change out the cotton roll if and when you notice it is soaked with saliva and blood. It is important not to change out the cotton roll too often because it can prevent the necessary clot to form which helps stop the bleeding. Pain medication can be given to keep the patient comfortable right after the treatment. For dental discomfort, it is best to use Ibuprofen / Motrin if not allergic. Space Maintainer Post-Op
Space maintainer
is cemented to the existing tooth that is behind the missing tooth with an arm extending out touching the tooth in front of the empty space. This arm is there to keep that empty space open to allow the adult tooth underneath to erupts when ready. The space maintainer is ready to be remove once the adult tooth erupts and touches the bars.
After placement of the space maintainer
it is very important that your child does not eat anything hard on it or play with it, as this can cause it to fall off. If it does fall off, it is imperative that you save the space maintainer so we can re-cement it back into place.
This was our second visit to kids city. The facility is bright and clean, and the staff is extremely friendly. Brianna took care of my three year old today, and was incredibly friendly, patient, and kind. We are very happy with the care he has received!
